Does My Child Need an Early Bedtime? 9 Key Reasons They Could Benefit from One

I (Megan) was chatting with a friend the other day whose daughter just started preschool. She mentioned that her little one is no longer napping and is currently going to bed as early as 5:30 or 6:00PM some nights. While this transition has been tough and may not seem ideal for family time, there are so many benefits to her daughter going down for an early bedtime.

Yes, a 5:30 or 6:00 early bedtime seems insane - my jaw (Erin’s) dropped when my own sleep coach told me to do it with my own baby. In my head I was thinking, won't putting him to bed so early cause him to start his day super early??

But, low and behold, early bedtimes have become one of my go-to strategies with my own children as well as our clients at Lake Country Sleep.

As pediatric sleep consultants, we’re here to share why an early bedtime can be a game-changer for your child’s overall well-being.

Early Bedtime Benefit 1 - Improved Sleep Quality

Children need ample sleep for healthy development. Preschoolers (ages 3-5) typically require 10-13 hours, while school-age children (6-13 years) need about 9-11 hours. An early bedtime allows your child to get the restorative sleep they need, leading to better health, mood, and focus during the day.

Early Bedtime Benefit 2 - Easier Nap Transitions

As kids grow, they often transition from multiple naps to just one or none, which can be a challenging phase. An early bedtime can help compensate for lost daytime sleep during these transitions, ensuring your child isn’t overtired and can adjust more smoothly.

Early Bedtime Benefit 3 - Recovery from Poor Nap Days

Some days just don’t go as planned—short naps, skipped naps, or difficulty settling down can leave your little one feeling cranky. This can lead to some serious bedtime BATTLES. An early bedtime provides a chance to recover from these poor nap days, allowing your child to catch up on essential sleep and wake up refreshed.

Early Bedtime Benefit 4 - Supporting Your Sick Child

When your child is feeling under the weather, sleep becomes even more vital. An early bedtime can support their recovery by providing extra hours for their body to heal, helping strengthen their immune system and making a significant difference in their recovery process.

Early Bedtime Benefit 5 - Better Behavior

Tired children can be more irritable and prone to tantrums. Sleep deprivation can lead to difficulty concentrating and poor impulse control. By establishing an early bedtime, you can help your child avoid the “witching hour” and encourage more positive interactions throughout the day.

Early Bedtime Benefit 6 - Easier Mornings

Mornings can be chaotic, especially with school routines. A well-rested child is more likely to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the day. An early bedtime can create smoother, more enjoyable mornings for the whole family.

Early Bedtime Benefit 7 - Promoting Family Time

Believe it or not, an earlier bedtime can also enhance family dynamics. With the kids tucked in earlier, parents can enjoy some well-deserved downtime to unwind or reconnect, balancing family needs with personal time.

Early Bedtime Benefit 8 - Better Academic Performance

Research shows that well-rested children tend to perform better academically. Sleep is crucial for cognitive function, memory consolidation, and problem-solving skills. By prioritizing an early bedtime, you’re setting your child up for success in school and beyond.

Early Bedtime Benefit 9 - Promoting Overall Well-Being

Adequate sleep supports a healthy immune system, helps regulate hormones, improves mental health, and leaves you feeling well-rested, refreshed and energized! Encouraging an early bedtime is an investment in your child’s long-term health and well-being.

While establishing an early bedtime may require some adjustments and consistency, the benefits far outweigh the initial challenges. Your child will be healthier, happier, and better equipped to face their day.
